Channel Unit
Custom-designed channel units include all functions necessary to transmit, receive, compress, and format signals. More specifically, this single board includes a satellite modem, vocoders (voice compression), echo canceller, E1 or T1 digital telephony interface, 4-wire analog telephony interface, telephone handset interface, 386 embedded controller, and LAN/IP interface.
The channel unit is configured dynamically for voice, fax, or data on a call-by-call basis. Single board satellite channel units cater to two simultaneous calls.
With a 70 MHz IF interface, these channel units are perfectly suited for use within a satellite Gateway/Hub or satellite Network Management Station. The channel units are typically installed within a rack-mounted chassis which is shared with all other MSS-designed units (telephone interface card, data / fax modem, frequency generation unit).

Each channel unit can be programmed to implement a variety of modulation schemes, including BPSK, QPSK, direct sequence spread-spectrum modulation. The center frequency is tunable over a 40 MHz range around 70 MHz.
